CHAPTER 1 - Heathcliff and the Western Wizards

 [Location: Heathcliff’s room, morning]

Chloe: Heath, sorry for the sudden intrusion! I hope we didn't come at a busy time...

Heathcliff: Don't worry. I was only planning to do an overhaul before you guys arrived.

Chloe: Overhaul?

Heathcliff: It means disassembling, cleaning and adjusting the parts of a mechanical object.

Heathcliff: The longer we use watches like this, the more prone they are to breaking. That's why they need that kind of care once in a while.

Heathcliff: I often do it in my spare time. Looking at the small parts calms me down, and it makes me concentrate and forget about the time.

Western Wizards: ............

Heathcliff: Ah, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to talk too much about myself!

Heathcliff: A-Anyway, may I know what you’re all here for?

Rustica: Actually, we have a guest for you. We'd really like the two of you to meet.

Heathcliff: A guest?

Heathcliff: Waa! Is that... a bookshelf? It walked into the room on its own...

Murr: Hahahaha! Heath looks so surprised! His eyes got sooo big!!

Shylock: Heathcliff, we're well aware that it's still a day early before your birthday, but please accept this humble gift from us. Happy birthday.

Heathcliff: T-Thank you… So, this bookshelf...

Murr: I placed a book about gemstones in it!! Sparkly, beautiful and delicious gemstones!

Rustica: And I placed an illustrated book about birds. I hope it helps you find a bird you will one day call your favorite.

Chloe: I put in a catalog of many different types of patterns and decorations! It's a book about the patterns used on clocks and buildings in various countries.

Shylock: And I left a fairy tale about a lord’s son who loves to read.

Shylock: It’s an adventure story where the hero encounters a lot of obstacles, but worry not, it has a happy ending.

Heathcliff: Happy ending… I can’t wait to read it.

Shylock: Then how about letting me do the honor of reading this fairy tale to you?

Rustica: That will be great. Your beautiful voice will surely take us on a wonderful adventure.

Murr: « Eanul Rambul » !

Heathcliff: Waa!

Chloe: Ah, it’s the hammock in Murr’s room.

Murr: I'll lend it to Heath just for today! Let's hang out here and listen to Shylock's story!

Murr: But I’ll get on it first!

Chloe: Ah! That’s unfair, Murr! I’m getting on the hammock too!

Rustica: Then, I shall join in as well.

Shylock: It seems like that hammock has the magic to bring out the child in everyone.

Heathcliff: You’re right… They look like they’re having so much fun.

Shylock: Then how about you experience that magic too? Please take your seat on the hammock, today's star.

Heathcliff: ...It's a bit embarrassing to be called a star, but I'm sure today will be fun because of you guys. Thank you so much!

Western Wizards: You’re welcome!

CHAPTER 2 - Heathcliff and the Eastern Wizards

[Location: Dining Hall, morning]

Shino: Hey, I brought Heath.

Nero: Seriously?

Faust: You brought him too early. We're not even ready yet.

Heathcliff: Nero and Master Faust? Uh, may I know what's going on here?

Shino: Can’t you tell just by looking?

Heathcliff: I can’t, that’s why I’m asking… These white dolls hanging by the window… Is there some kind of ritual happening right now?

Shino: These are spell-casting tools from the sage’s world. They’re called “ruterute boya”.

Nero: No, you said it wrong. It’s “rururun boya”.

Faust: You both said it wrong. It’s “teru teru bozu”.

Heathcliff: Ahaha, so these dolls are called “teru teru bozu”. I’ll make sure to remember that.

Heathcliff: So… what kind of spell did you cast with these?

Shino: Heath, listen. These dolls are amazing. The sage told me they have the power to change the weather.

Heathcliff: The weather?! Does that mean these teru teru bozu are as powerful as Lord Oz?

Nero: No, no, I don’t think they’re that powerful.

Nero: We heard you'll be going out with the Sage tonight, and Shino told us he wanted to do something about this rain so it doesn't ruin your day out with them.

Faust: We don't even know how effective these dolls are... but Shino insisted he wanted to do this for you as a birthday present.

Heathcliff: ...Hehe, thank you so much. Huddling together and making all these lovely dolls for me...

Faust: Hey, don't get wild ideas now. We did not “huddle together”. And these dolls don’t even look “lovely”.

Heathcliff: S-Sorry. But...

Nero: As teach mentioned, Shino started all of this. It was also him who prepared all the materials we used.

Shino: Of course. It's only natural to do something like this on my lord's birthday.

Heathcliff: Thank you for doing all of this for me, Shino.

Heathcliff: Hm...? I smell something fragrant on the teru teru bozu’s heads.

Shino: I put some herbs in the cotton to imitate your amulet. It was Faust who told me to do that.

Faust: Hey, there was no need to drop my name.

Nero: Haha. For someone who complains so much, you sure care about your students a lot, don't you? As expected of you, teach.

Faust: ...Then I'm sure you don't mind me telling him you were restlessly making eggs en cocottes since this morning, right?

Nero: Ahh, now you are the one revealing information...

Heathcliff: Could it be… that’s for me too?

Nero: Well, you can say that. Now that we're done here, I'll bring over some breakfast.

Shino: I'm sure the rain will stop while we're eating. We made the teru teru bozu, after all.

Heathcliff: Yup. I’m looking forward to it.

Heathcliff: But no matter what the weather will be like, today is already the best birthday for me! Thank you, everyone.

Eastern Wizards: You’re welcome.

* A teru teru bozu (てるてる坊主) is a small handmade doll made out of white paper or cloth and is believed to be a talisman that brings good weather. It also got mentioned in one of Oz’s character episodes: “Teru Teru Bozu VS Oz?”.

CHAPTER 3 - Heathcliff and the Master Sage

[Location: Courtyard, evening]

Heathcliff: Thank you for accompanying me today, Master Sage.

Akira: It was my pleasure. I've barely watched plays before, but I had so much fun watching the one we went to today!

Akira: It's all thanks to your parents’ invitation. But was it really okay for them to also get a ticket for me?

Heathcliff: Of course. They're the ones who planned my birthday celebration this year, after all.

Heathcliff: They wanted to make sure I'd have a great time with you... And I really am happy to get the chance to go out with you today.

Akira: I'm glad you had a lot of fun, Heath.

Heathcliff: ............

Heathcliff: You're right. So many people care about me and went out of their way to celebrate my birthday. Today and yesterday were so much fun.

Heathcliff: Honestly, it's like everyone’s just wasting their time doing all this for me, and I feel bad about that, but...

Akira: That’s not true.

Akira: Don’t feel bad for being happy, Heath.

Heathcliff: Master Sage...

Heathcliff: ...Um, here. I’d like you to take this, if it’s okay.

Heath held out a small paper bag. The first thing I noticed about it was its fragrant smell.

Akira: Are these… coffee beans?

Heathcliff: Yes. I know they aren't much but... I wanted to express my gratitude to you, Master Sage.

Heathcliff: I was able to experience so much happiness like today because I came here to the manor.

Akira: Heath… Thank you so much.

Akira: Actually, I also prepared a gift...

Akira: I chose this as my birthday present for you, but it's...

Heathcliff: Ah! Are those coffee beans I smell?

Akira: I didn’t mean to bring the same thing...

Heathcliff: No, I'm more than glad to receive this. It’s nice to know that we thought of the same thing to give to each other.

Heathcliff: Master Sage, would you like to compare these two types of coffee now?

Akira: Compare them?

Heathcliff: Yes. To be honest, I want to talk more with you about the show we watched earlier...

Akira: ...Of course! Let’s continue celebrating your birthday over a cup of coffee!

CARD EPISODE

A Celebration of Fear…?

Akira: I was told that you were with the Western wizards the day before your birthday.

Heathcliff: Yes, they all came to my room. We had so much fun playing games and eating snacks.

Heathcliff: ...But at some point, things got a bit scary...

Akira: Huh?! Did something happen?

Heathcliff: Yes. It was fun and lively at first, until Murr suddenly said, "Let's play 'A Hundred Stories'."

Akira: A hundred stories?

Heathcliff: When people gather at night and tell a hundred scary stories, which are apparently more known as "teppan neta* ", a terrifying demon will then come to visit them once they're done...

Akira: (They probably learned that term from the previous sage…)

Akira: You must have heard lots of scary stories from the Western wizards.

Heathcliff: I did. I was so scared that night...

Heathcliff: Shylock’s story was about an acquaintance of his who went on a trip for an entire month and left a pot of stew in their house.

Akira: (What?)

Heathcliff: When they opened the pot for the first time in a month, Shylock gave a detailed description of what they saw and... Ugh, I don't even want to remember it.

Heathcliff: If someone tells a hundred stories that are as scary as that, then I won't be surprised if a demon really does get summoned at the end.

Akira: (That gathering they had was scary in a different way…)

* The original text was retained to emphasize that it’s a foreign term to the wizards. “鉄板ネタ” or “teppan neta” is a Japanese term for a joke that’s guaranteed to get a laugh out of those who hear/read it.
